Coaches Comments:

In the absence of our coach Adam Brown who was away on business, I (Brian Briscoe) took the team yesterday for their game. The game was played with an excellent spirit, whilst some players coached readiness for the physicality that next year will bring with some brave marks, close marking, contested footy at ground level and a real will to do their best. I was delighted with some of our lower-profile players and their willingness to work hard to do well. We did some pre-game drills on leading to get a kick pass, as well as drills that encourage calling for the ball, using the names of their team-mates, etc. This was so evident during the game as our willingness to show for passes and communication was superb. I decided to elect 3 captains on the team, one in each line and gave the player (which I changed every quarter) responsibility for “leading their line” and communicating with the team mates in their area – this seemed to work really well and I noticed our “shape” was very good throughout the game (perhaps our boys are better at listening to each other than they are listening to us sometimes!). The umpire did a great job yesterday, he let the game flow but blew up a few times for over-carrying, where he brought the player back and got him to kick the ball instead, which I was really encouraged by. He also made sure he completely kept up with play so was close to the action. I loved it and hope to coach again sometime.
